2 Surefire Strategies to Increase Sales Revenue

2 Surefire Strategies to Increase Sales Revenue2 Surefire Strategies to Increase Sales RevenueSuccess in schlussverkauf comes down to one thing selling enough to make a profit. Thats going to be every schlussverkaufpersons and small business owners goal. That can be easier said than done There are two different strategies you can pursue to get to the point of profitability. If youre not doing as well as youd like with selling, you have two basic options to help you improve your numbers. Increase Your Sales Increasing sales is usually the first strategy that salespeople adopt. It simply means increasing the total number of sales that you make. If you normally sell 100 widgets per month, you might set a goal of selling 125 per month instead. That means increasing your sales activities (e.g. making 50 cold calls a day instead of 40) or else improving your conversion rate (sticking to 40 cold calls per day, but changing to a new cold calling script that gets you a higher percentage o f appointments). Increase Your Margins The second strategy is a bit more subtle but can also be a bigger revenue booster. Instead of increasing your total number of sales, you try to increase the quality of your sales. You focus on selling those products and services that return a higher profit margin. So instead of bumping your monthly goal from 100 to 125, you would look at a breakdown of your sales and try to increase the percentage of premium sales. If youve been selling 75 regular widgets and 25 premium widgets per month, you might aim to sell 50 regular and 50 premium widgets instead. The reason this can end up making you a bigger profit than the first strategy, is that profit margins are typically higher on high-end products than on the lower-priced ones. Choosing a Strategy So which one is a better strategy for you in your current situation? Youll have to look at your sales activities and metrics closely to decide. First, sit down and make a list of your daily on-th e-job activities. Ideally, you would spend a couple of days writing down everything you do as you do it, including how long you spend on each task. This can get awfully tedious, but the results are often eye-opening. You want to figure out exactly how much time youre spending on sales activities (calling prospects, attending appointments, etc.) versus other activities (writing reports, attending company meetings, etc.). If your time is being eaten up by non-sales tasks, you can either try to delegate those tasks to someone else or work on ways to cut corners and slice off some more time for sales tasks. Sales is a numbers game. The more time you spend on actual sales-related activities, the more sales you will make. On the other hand, if youre spending plenty of time on sales activities and your sales metrics look good (i.e. youre converting a respectable percentage of prospects into sales) then its time to shift your focus from quantity to quality. After all, selling 100 widgets at a $1 profit margin is not nearly as good for you and your commission check as selling 25 premium widgets at a $10 profit margin. If youre working on a sales team, you may want to set a meeting with your sales manager and ask him or her which strategy is better for you. The sales manager will probably have a better grasp of company goals as a whole and can offer you a different point of view, which can help keep you from tearing off down the wrong path. Another option is to try the first strategy for a month, then try the second strategy for a month, and compare your numbers. Did you have a really hard time finding premium prospects? Then the first strategy is probably best for you. Or if you really struggled to fit in more cold calling time, then you probably should focus on increasing quality instead of quantity. At the end of the day, the strategy that best fits your selling style is going to work better for you.

How to Get Started in the Music Industry as a Musician

How to Get Started in the Music Industry as a MusicianHow to Get Started in the Music Industry as a MusicianPerhaps the most common question any young, aspiring musicians asks is, What is the first thing I should do to get started as a musician? Its easy to understand why. After spending years honing a craft any artist is anxious to know what happens next.So now what? The problem with this common question is that there is no one size fits all answer. There are so many things that can inform the next steps in your music career, including your personal goals and genre of music. Major Record Label vs. Independent Music Career Perhaps the easiest thing to consider first, and something that can offer a bit of a roadmap, is whether you envision an independent music career, or if you binnensee yourself settling into the major label world. An independent music career can include a do-it-yourself approach, or you can connect with music businesses and labels working at the independent leve l. Which is right for you depends on a few different factors. First is a matter of simple preference. Some musicians are fiercely independent and want to do it all, while others want to focus solely on their music. Genre choice also matters, particularly if youre interested in breaking into a major-label-dominated world like pop music. Sometimes your brand of music will dictate how you need to approach your career. Make a Plan Identifying your industry path will help guide the most important next step Making a plan. The indie route may see you producing and releasing your own music, and either shopping it to indie labels yourself or with the help of a manager. Entry to a major label most often requires the facilitation of a manager or a lawyer to shop your music to the labels on your behalf. But how do you attract the attention of a manager or attorney? Playing live provides exposure to the industry and to fans, and every show brings you one step closer to winning over a manager or winning over a fan base to attract the attention of managers, labels, booking agents and others within the industry. As your base grows, demos become the next clear step. The road to notoriety can be frustrating. A lot of intangibles may cloud the process of developing a music career, but persistence and dedication are key. Define your goals, make your plan, then start playing live. Setting these wheels in motion will set everything else off. Youll learn how best to react to the unique opportunities they generate for you as a growing artist.

Common Mistakes when Managing Contingent Workers

Common Mistakes when Managing Contingent WorkersCommon Mistakes when Managing Contingent WorkersCommon Mistakes when Managing Contingent Workersbrightcove.createExperiences() BenningtonWe all know temporary staff can be a huge blessing when youre busy but not busy enough to take on full-time hires. The problem is temps are different so you have to manage them differently and thats where a lot of companies get it wrong. The number one mistake by far is hiring off the street. As we all know, when you have the right people in place, a big chunk of your management issues are already solved. So the notion of, we just need help so lets get somebody in here right now is disastrous especially in a small geschftliches miteinander where theres no such thing as flying under the radar and everybodys job is critical. So you really want to use the same care throughout the hiring process that you would for your full-time people. This means a complete job description, knowing the competencies that your e looking for and maybe even mora than one interview yes, even for a temp. The second mistake when it comes to managing temporary staff is full blast fire hose training.Maybe youre like other small businesses and you dont really take the time to onboard temps because youre thinking, why bother? Right? But theres a good chance that what is obvious to you about your clients and your business isnt going to be quite so crystal clear to your temp. So when you give them task, they may nod their head but have absolutely no idea what youre talking about and it will show in their work.A good rule of thumb is a half-day of training for every month that you expect to have your temp on staff. So if its a six months engagement, they get 3 full days of onboarding. Now obviously, you dont expect them to be able to, you know, recite your policy manual, but they do need to know exactly what you expect from them. They need to know what your core valuesare and how to live those values everyday, if you exp ect them to really merge into the fast lane with all the rest of your people. The final mistake is treating or allowing your staff to treat your temp like a temp. This is just good manners but more than that, your customers have no idea which of your staff are temporary versus full-time hires and frankly they dont even care.Same thing if your temps are working only with your internal people they dont care either because they just want the same thing that your customers want which is a seamless experience and solutions to their problems. So every employee you have, whether theyre with you for 3 months or 3 years, needs to know how to provide that. You want your temp to feel like real partners in your business because who knows, they can end up being your next great hire or even your next great customer.More from Emily Bennington Video Best Practices for Todays Recruiting LandscapeVideo How to Conduct an InterviewVideo New Employee Orientation

The Importance of Upskilling Your Employees

The Importance of Upskilling Your EmployeesThe Importance of Upskilling Your EmployeesIn an era of increasing automation and changing business priorities, upskilling is taking on new urgency.Upskilling is mora than just a new term for professional training and development. It comes along at a time when teaching your employees new skills is no longer just a nice thing for a company to offer but a must-do. Heres whyWhy upskilling mattersThe nature of jobs is shifting. Digital innovations are affecting every company and nearly every employee these days. Automation has taken away many jobs but at the same time replaced them with new roles requiring new skills. Those who could do their jobs without strong technical abilities just a couple of years ago must now use an array of technology tools in their everyday tasks. Finding and developing people with digital business skills is not just a priority in IT, but across the organization.Employee expectations are changing. Another reason upskil ling is becoming urgent for employers is because newer professionals arent going to be satisfied in their jobs if theyre not given serious opportunities to learn. In a and Enactus survey of Generation Z workers (born 1990-1999), a whopping 91 percent cited professional training as an important factor when choosing an employer. Its not just Gen Z employees, either smart professionals of all ages know they need to be continually developing their skills if they want to stay relevant in the workplace these days. Often, they dont have the time or money to invest in upskilling outside of work, so they look to their employer for support in this area.Training fuels motivation. Training and development programs boost morale, employee satisfaction, and succession planning. Any time you invest in your employees by providing or supporting upskilling opportunities, they feel more valued, and in turn, grow more loyal to the company. Whats more, when your employees learn new skills, they put them selves in a position to take the next step on their career path with the company, and thats a win-win The employee gets a desired promotion, and the organization gets to fill an important position with an experienced, skilled worker who has plenty of institutional knowledge and can hit the ground running. It boosts the bottom line. Though upskilling programs can cost money, they also provide strong ROI. For one thing, its often easier and cheaper to address skills gaps in your company by training your current employees, rather than going out and hiring new ones. For another, employees who feel like they dont have the opportunity to grow and move up at their company tend to leave for other opportunities. That means you have to replace them, and the costs involved in the recruitment and hiring process are high, from advertising the position to potentially paying a signing bonus to the new person. And thats not even taking into account the time it takes to train the new person once they re on the job, and the loss of knowledge and experience the former employee took with them when they left.Even if youre convinced your company should be investing in upskilling opportunities, you may not have a good sense of how to implement them in your organization. Here are a few ideasUpskilling opportunitiesLunch-and-learn training sessions. unterstellung are attractive for staff who feel they dont have time to fit in training in the middle of a workday. You can either provide lunch or ask attendees to bring their own to these meetings. You can bring in outside experts to lead the sessions or tap an employee with expertise in the subject.Mentoring and shadowing. You have plenty of subject-matter experts within your company, so why not give them a way to pass their knowledge along? Mentors get to hone their leadership skills, while the employees shadowing them gain valuable real-world experience and advice that can be difficult to pick up in a classroom setting.Virtual learning. It can be hard to get your staff together for on-site training these days, when an increasing number of people are working remotely or from different locations. One solution an online platform for training, where employees can log in at a designated time and follow a facilitator through a class or lesson. behauptung days, training software is more immersive and dynamic than ever participants can take quizzes and surveys, watch videos illustrating a particular topic, and even use virtual rooms for breakout sessions.Microlearning. For certain subjects, like boosting employees understanding of a particular software program, learning in quick bursts can be particularly effective. It entails watching short web-based videos focused on a specific topic, and sometimes completing an exercise or quiz at the end. The sessions typically take between five and 10 minutes, which means employees can take part in them almost any time they have a short break during the day.Tuition reimbursement or as sistance. Sometimes, your employees need to study a subject in depth, in a way that goes beyond the organizations capabilities. When thats the case, its often best to consider paying in part or in full for pertinent courses and industry-recognized certification programs.Creating upskilling opportunities at your company isnt just smart, its critical to the health and growth of your organization. Forward-thinking companies that consider what they want their staff to learn and what training and development methods are best for their goals reap the benefits with employees who are better at their jobs, more motivated and more likely to remain with the company.

5 Email Templates to Use When Asking for a Reference

5 Email Templates to Use When Asking for a Reference5 Email Templates to Use When Asking for a Reference Its no secret asking for references can be intimidating. Since references often dont come from the company youre working at currently - especially if you havent yet told them youre sniffing out new opportunities - you often must reach out to colleagues from across the spectrum of yur career. This means contacting people you may not have spoken to in a while, and asking them to take time out of their schedule to remember your attributes and speak about them with your potential employers. The quality of your references can make or break certain hiring processes, so its of the utmost importance to find the right people.Although sending the same stock email out to each potential reference can save you time, its not advised. A reference request should be rollealized to the person youre sending it to, and the type of relationship you had with them.We reached out to ca reer experts Tiffany Franklin , who is the founder of TFJ Career Coaching and works in career services at an Ivy League School and Emily Kapit , MS, MRW, ACRW, CPRW, career strategist and owner of ReFresh Your Step career consultancy, to learn mora about the right way to ask someone to serve as a reference over email. You want them to feel like youre asking them because you truly want them to be a reference, not just because you have to have three, says Kapit, underscoring the importance of tailoring each request to the person youre reaching out to.To get an idea of what personalized email requests for references would look like, these five templates give a full idea of what type of language is appropriate for different relationships.Hi Donna I hope you have been doing well. Its hard to believe it has been three years since we worked together. I learned so much while we were working on the XYZ project and have fond memories of working at company name.Things have been good here. I have enjoyed working at company name for the past two years and getting to explore the city of Denver. After much contemplation, Ive decided its time for new challenges, so Im beginning to search for Marketing Director roles and hope to relocate to San Diego later this year.Would you be available to serve as a reference and provide a positive recommendation for me? If you are, I would be happy to send you my resume and a sample job description so you have an updated view of my experience and what Im seeking.Thank you for considering this. I look forward to connecting with you again and hearing your updates. This reference request, written by Franklin, masterfully re-establishes the connection with the former boss and brings them up to speed on your recent professional history. The wording of your message to re-introduce yourself to a potential reference will depend on the nature of the relationship (former boss vs. coworker), how close you were at the time, whether you saw each ot her outside of work in social settings and exactly how long has it been since you last connected, Franklin says. She adds that its also important to consider the timing of your request and how far you are in the job search process , which can determine the likelihood that they will be imminently contacted.I hope youre well. Ive been following your career via LinkedIn for the last several years and see that youve moved up to new role - congratulations In the last few years, I have also moved up and am currently doing current role. Im looking to transition to an even more senior role and am conducting both an internal and an external search regarding future opportunities. In doing so, I welches reflecting on who would be a really good reference for me, and felt that you would be one.I recall our time working on particular project and I thought that given what Im looking for in that next role, you would be a great person to speak to the skills I bring to the table as well as the kind of hard worker that I am, and would really appreciate if you could serve as a reference for me.Of course, I am more than happy to do the same for you at any point in time. Please do let me know. Additionally, if you would be so kind as to put the recommendation on my LinkedIn profile, I would greatly appreciate that. Again, I would be more than happy to do the same for you.I wish you continued success in your career and look forward to being in touch. Please do reach out with any questionsThis template, written by Kapit, contains a few powerful elements. First of all, it gives the recommender a specific reason why youre asking them, of all people, to be your reference. Second, youre following what some call the golden rule of networking offering your help to someone else, so that they may offer their help to you. This particular template offers to recommend or serve as a reference for the other person in return for them doing the same for you - a great strategy for making the ask feel much less one-sided.Hi Mr. Thomas I hope youre doing well. Its hard to believe that its already been four years since we worked together at company name. How have you been? I really appreciate all I learned during that time and the guidance you provided. It has been so helpful with my client projects here at company name. I have been networking as you suggested and recently became aware of an interesting opportunity to become a Marketing Manager. Given my work on client projects over the past few years, I feel it would be a perfect fit and great next step. Would you be willing to provide a positive recommendation for me? Ill be happy to provide you with my resume, full details of the job and any other info you would find helpful.Thank you for considering this. I hope we can catch up properly soon. This request, written by Franklin, shows the power of a brief - yet humble, respectful and professional email. When you have reservations about sending a request to someone, or ar e worried that the connection might be too tenuous, always defer to a humble, professional tone. In addition, Franklin says, when making any request in life, its helpful to use empathy and think about how you would feel if you received a similar request. If you get a feeling in the pit of your stomach that youre asking for too much or it sounds like youre sucking up or something like that, re-think the email.I hope all is well with you. I heard you were promoted to new position at former company. NiceIm reaching out today because Im looking to make my next career move, and Im in need of references for the positions Im applying for. Given our extensive working history together, I thought that you would be able to speak to my ability as a manager, and I was wondering if you would be willing to serve as a reference. If asked, I think that the example of X project we worked on together would be particularly salient.Of course I would be more than willing to act as a reference for you or provide you with any sort of recommendation. Please let me know if you have any questionsWhile its less common to ask someone who you formerly managed to be a reference for you, it can be appropriate in cases where youre looking to show off your management skills to the hiring team. Reaching out to a person who was your subordinate has a slightly different tone than asking someone who you worked under. You want to mirror the tone of the relationship that you had with them in your prior role, Franklin advises. That way, the style of your request is consistent with how you have always interacted with that person and wont seem outside the balance of what that relationship is and always has been. Franklin also provides a number of templates outreach examples in her Essential Guide to Securing References for a Job Search. I just heard news that your company recently accomplishment. Congratulations Im always heartened and delighted to see what your company is doing in the world. Im writi ng today because Im looking to transition into a new role doing new job, and Im looking for a few people who can serve as references for me and speak to my skills as a your profession. I thought that the project we worked on last year was a great example of how I can list skills. I would be very grateful if you were able to serve as a reference for me. Please let me know if you have any questions - and Im also happy to refresh your memory on the details of the project and the role I played if you want me to send anything over. Try to be specific regarding why youre asking that particular person to be a reference for you, counsels Kapit. In this template, praise is given to the former client in order to remind them of their connection to you. In addition, listing specific skills tied to the project you worked on together can help trigger their memory of why exactly they would be qualified to comment on your professional prowess.

They#8217;re Not Soft Skills They#8217;re Courage Skills

They8217re Not Soft Skills They8217re Courage Skills They8217re Not Soft Skills They8217re Courage Skills Depending on whom you ask, todays college graduates will change careers an average of 4-6 times during their lives. Note that I did not say jobs.Industries will rise and fall in months rather than years. That means the single most important skill for success in todays and tomorrows professional landscape is the ability to change continuously. In our career and engagement programs at Inspired Work, weve found that true personal change is often frightening to many professionals. That may be because it involves not only letting go of our previous beliefs, but also learning brand new sets of beliefs. The dance of unlearning, learning, and relearning is central to success in modern careers. Thus far, we have assisted more than 42,000 people in defining what they were born to do and assessing how to do it best. This how is a matter of building up any life skills or soft skills, as t hey are called you may be missing. That may sound daunting, but all that it takes to learn them is initiative and a small dose of courage. Many of these skills are also the very ones people need in order to successfully manage change in their lives and careers. Personal transformation is often what a person needs to break out of the trance so familiar to the 87 percent of the worlds workers who are not engaged at work.Given how important change and transformation are to career success, why do we dismissively categorize the skills we need to manage these things as soft skills? The more I have spoken with professionals on the subject, the more I realize that soft skills scare people, partially because of their designation.Wouldnt they become more attractive if we used the term courage skills? Not only would that be more a honest name, but also it would show people that these vital and necessary skills are aspirational, not beneath them. And what courage skills does one need in order to succeed in these tumultuous times? Here are a few examplesThe ability to draw healthy attention to oneself. The ability to give healthy attention to others. The ability to build an effective and comprehensive support system. The ability to sell ones ideas and concepts. The ability to solicitothers for help. The ability to respond to fear in healthy ways. Its time to build a stronger and more fulfilling future of work. Lets start by acquiring the skills we need.David Harder is the founder ofInspired Work.

Writing Letters Can Boost Your Career - The Muse

Writing Letters Can Boost Your Career - The MuseWriting Letters Can Boost Your Career On January 1, I made an unusual resolution. I committed to sending one hand-written letter per week- and not to relatives, or friends, or former teaczu sichs, but to other professionals. What would these letters say? That would depend on the week and the person. (Basically, Id wing it.) My only rule was the letter wouldnt include any requests I didnt want it to come off as a polite way of asking for something. At the end of the first week, I actually had the perfect reason to write a letter. Id been working with a PR rep on a story and wanted to thank her for her helpfulness, responsiveness, and all-around great attitude. notlage only did she give me everything I needed for the article, but she also took the time to answer my questions about the public relations industry and her career. Im interested in PR, so getting an entry-level employees perspective was super helpful. I dropped a letter saying a ll that in the mail. A week later, I got a happy email.I almost never get mail at work, so I was super excited it read. By the way, did you have any luck finding a summer internship? If you forward me your resume, Ill pass it along to our VPId mentioned I was looking for a summer position during one of our conversations, but wed never brought it up again, and I certainly hadnt mentioned it in the letter. While my gesture wasnt done out of self-interest, it may end up transforming my career- and even if I dont get the internship, Ill have turned a casual professional relationship into a stronger connection. The second week rolled around. I decided to send a letter to my mentor were always talking over email, Skype, and phone, but this would be a nice change of pace. I updated her on my current projects, asked her how her startup was doing, and described how I was incorporating the feedback shed recently given me.My mentor sent a text thanking me for the wonderful notenzeichen. I figur ed that was that. Then I got a package from her, containing a book shed loved and her own hand-written letter. Now we regularly communicate by snail mail. Its a great tradition, and its brought another dimension to our relationship.I decided to write my third letter to a writer who contributes to one of the same websites as I do. Not only did she inspire me to apply for the job, but I love the honesty, humor, and charm of her pieces. I sent the letter to the magazine headquarters so they could forward it to her.She sent me an email in response, saying my words had made her day, shed checked out some of my work, and shed give my name to a couple editors she knew who were looking for writers.Sending someone a hand-written letter shows effort and gratitude. If you dont have an ask- especially if you dont have an ask- it turns out its a gesture people really, really want to reward you for. Even without the tangible benefits of my letter campaign, Id definitely keep it up. Its one of the simplest ways you can strengthen a professional tie. Starting is simple Buy yourself a nice pack of cards and some stamps. Then, look for opportunities to send a letter to other people youve worked with or (like the case of the writer I admired) want to work with. Almost anyone is fair game- a person in the office next to you, a person in the office across the world from you, a former co-worker, your current boss, an intern whos been extra helpful, someone whos doing great things in your industry, an inspiring speaker or author I could go on and on. If you dont know someones address, you can always ask him or her. Just say, Hey Im sending you something in the mail, can I get your address? However, if you want to make your letters a surprise, youll have to be a bit more creative. For people working in the same space, leave your note on their desks. For others, send it to their workplace (finding the address should only take two seconds on Google). The only rules are you cant ask for anything, the person cant be from your personal life, and you have to send one letter a week.If youll be joining me, let me know how it goes ajavuu Ill write a letter to every person who tweets a picture of his or her letter and tags me.Photo of mailbox courtesy of Shutterstock.

How to Become a U.S. Border Patrol Agent

How to Become a U.S. Border Patrol Agent How to Become a U.S. Border Patrol Agent The United States Customs and Border Protection agency is about far more than simply curbing the influx of illegal immigration and undocumented workers into the U.S. In fact, The primary focus of CBP agents is to keep the country safe by preventing dangerous weapons and people from entering the nations borders and fighting to reduce the growing and horrific crime of human trafficking. Theres a lot that goes into preparing someone for such a worthwhile job, so its worth finding out exactly how to become a U.S. Border Patrol agent. Minimum Requirements for U.S. CBP Agents Before you even consider applying for the job, you need to make sure you meet the minimum qualifications set for CBP agents. In order to have your application considered and to advance through the hiring process, you must: Be a United States citizen and currently live in the United States.Be under 37 years unless you have prior federal law enforcement experience or are a military veteran.Hold a valid driver licenseBe fluent in Spanish or be able to learn the languageBe willing to work anywhere along the southwestern border of the United States Next Steps to Become a Border Patrol Agent If you meet the minimum requirements, the first step is to apply for the job. You can do so by visiting USAJOBS and searching for Customs and Border Patrol Opportunities. If your application meets muster, youll progress through a series of steps that include physical and written testing, a background check, a polygraph exam, an oral interview process and finally training at the U.S. Border Patrol Academy. Written Testing for Border Patrol Agents At the time you apply for a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agent job, youll also register to take the U.S. Border Patrol Entrance Examination. The test consists of four sections that measure your math and logical reasoning skills, writing skills, and your past experiences and achievements. The test takes about 5 hours to complete  and is available at various locations throughout the United States. To pass the written test, youll need to achieve a score of at least 70 percent. In addition to the test, you will also participate in a Spanish language assessment to determine your ability to speak or learn to speak Spanish. Once you pass the written exam, youll move on to the first of two physical assessments. Physical Fitness Requirements for Border Patrol Agents The first physical assessment, the PFT-1, is a medical screening to ensure you are healthy enough for the rigors of the job. The medical screening will ensure that you meet the following requirements: Vision must be 20/100 or better in each eye and correctable to 20/20 with lenses. You must have normal color, peripheral and depth perception. You must have adequate hearing in both ears. You must not have any physical impairments that could pose a danger to you on the job.You must be in good health and your blood pressure must be within the normal range. The second assessment, known as the PFT-2, is a fitness assessment that comes later in the process, about 30 days before you begin the academy. It measures your overall physical fitness level and requires the following: Complete a 220-yard run in 46 seconds or lessComplete 25 sit-ups in 1 minuteComplete 20 push-ups in 1 minuteComplete a 1.5-mile run in 15 minutes or less If youre not yet in shape, start working now to get yourself where you need to be. The above minimums arent overly taxing, but they can be difficult for someone who is not accustomed to physical activity. Consult with a physician before beginning an exercise program, and then start a regimen that can put you in the best position for success. Background Investigation for Border Patrol Agents If you make it far enough in the process, youll undergo a very thorough background investigation. The background check will include criminal histories, prior employment, references, training, and education verification and a polygraph exam. It is extremely important to understand that if you have any inclination toward working in any criminal justice career, you need to refrain from doing anything that could jeopardize your chance of getting hired later on down the road. The U.S. Border Patrol Academy If you can make it through all the hoops, youll move on to the United State Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico. The academy consists of 58 days of training in physical fitness, U.S. immigration law, firearms marksmanship, defensive tactics, and other law enforcement-related subjects. For those not fluent in Spanish, after you complete the 58-day basic academy youll attend another 40-day Spanish language course that will consist of instruction and immersion in the language. If you are not functionally fluent in Spanish at the end of the course, you will not be able to continue with the agency. Becoming a U.S. Border Patrol Agent Now more than ever, keeping the nations borders safe and secure for U.S. citizens, visitors and immigrants is vitally important. As the crime of human trafficking is on the rise and concerns of potential international terrorist attacks remain, U.S. Border Patrol agents stand on the front lines to maintain the integrity of the countrys borders. If youd like to be a part of keeping the nation secure while helping some of the most vulnerable among us, you should definitely consider a career as a U.S. Border Patrol Agent.

Bad Reputations at Work

Bad Reputations at Work Bad Reputations at Work As hard as it may be to practice what I preach, I’m a firm believer that we shouldn’t care what others think about us. After all, it’s not great for our self-esteem to constantly be worried about how people will perceive us. But, while I will stand behind this in most situations, the fact of the matter is there is at least one instance in which what others think about you is extremely important- work. As Selena Rezvani- speaker, leadership consultant, and author of The New Generation of Women Leaders: What You Need to Lead but Won’t Learn in Business School and Pushback: How Smart Women Ask- and Stand Up- for What They Want- says, “The most important career capital you have isn’t your technical skills or academic pedigree. It’s not your high-flying title. It’s not even your relationships… It’s your reputation.” So, in an effort to make you more likable at work, here are eight reputations you’ll really want to avoid earning. 1. The Late Arriver It’s really annoying if you’re perpetually late to meetings, even if it’s only by a few minutes. You’re not the only one who’s busy, and consistently showing up tardy to the party is really disrespectful. So, plan accordingly and get there on time. Most likely, part of this planning includes determining why you’re always running late. Perhaps you need to set your alarm for a different time or make your coffee at home instead of waiting in line at Starbucks. Whatever it is, figure it out and make the appropriate changes in order to be on time (or, better yet, early). 2. The Snitch I was a fairly superior tattletale in my preschool days. And my teacher never failed to say, “Did this person hurt you? Did this person hurt someone else?” And if the answer to both was no, she would say “Then why are you telling me this?” Because I want to get this person in trouble, gosh darn it! (Preschool was pretty cutthroat in the early ’90s.) Basically, unless what someone else is doing is detrimentally affecting you or your team, you don’t need to tell your manager. It’s really none of your business. So, before you start blabbing, answer the following: “Why am I telling this person this?” If the only reason you can think of is “just because” or, worse, solely to make your colleague look bad, keep your mouth shut. It’s not your place and, ultimately, it reflects badly on you. 3. The Drunk So, you go out for an innocent happy hour drink with some colleagues and all of a sudden you’re three sheets to the wind. (Hey, when drinks are $3 off from 3 PM to 5 PM, it’s natural to want to take advantage of that- I get it). But, that one drink too many causes you to badmouth your co-workers, stumble all over the place, share way too many personal details (you did what at your New Year’s party? Gross), and so forth. Just like that, no one at the office takes you seriously anymore. And the happy hour invites stop coming in, too. Here’s the thing: You can go get a beer with your team and not end up embarrassing yourself. These two things aren’t mutually exclusive. Limit yourself to one or two drinks, and in addition, double fist it. Nope, not with two alcoholic beverages- beer in one hand, water in the other. Furthermore, you don’t have to drink. It’s perfectly acceptable to just grab some H20 or other booze-free drink instead. Remember: Office happy hours aren’t really about the drinks- they’re much more about getting to know each other. 4. The Drama Queen (or King) Have you ever had a co-worker who makes a big deal out of nothing? All the time? He runs around like a chicken with his head cut off, and when you ask him what the problem is, it’s quite anticlimactic (because after the huge fuss he made, you thought the entire world was burning). Yep. That’s a drama queen. Mistakes happen. People mess up. But not each one of these situations needs to be much ado about nothin’. Before you stage a major freak out, take a step back from the problem at hand and assess it objectively. If you’re having trouble doing that on your own, it’s OK to (calmly) chat about the situation with a colleague, or even your boss. Most things really aren’t as bad as you think they are, so don’t pull the fire alarm all the time. 5. The Lazy One Listen, there are always going to be tasks we don’t want to do. That’s not just the nature of every job, but it’s the nature of life, too. But doing a shoddy job because you’re too lazy hurts your team and you. Think about it: If you’re not putting in 100%, you’re also not taking advantage of the opportunity to learn new things and build upon current skill sets. And, you’re making your team believe you’re fairly useless. Are you? The solution is easy here- put your best effort into everything you do. No, you don’t have to go above and beyond all the time. But you should make sure you fulfill all of your responsibilities- and that you do it well. 6. The Know-it-All Wise words from my dad: Just because you’re smart doesn’t mean you always need to be talking. And it’s true. Yes, you shouldn’t “hide the truth” from your co-workers. If they’re going down a completely incorrect path and headed for disaster, you should steer them in the right direction if you can. But, you don’t need to say something just to prove someone wrong or to show off how brilliant you are. Ask yourself: “Is what I’m about to say relevant to the conversation? Does it help anyone, or does it just show off my completely unrelated knack for computing difficult calculus problems in my head?” Telling everyone every single thing you know doesn’t make them like you. It doesn’t make them think you’re the next Einstein. It makes them think you’re really freaking annoying. 7. The Self-Server Speaking of hiding the truth from your colleagues, this is totally something the self-server would do. Instead of lending a hand, you keep valuable information to yourself and only share it when it can make you look good (i.e., in front of your boss or the CEO of the company). Other things the self-server does? Takes credit for others’ work, throws people under the bus, and goes above and beyond to knock his projects out of the park but declines to help others (just to name a few slimy traits). Eliminate your ego from the game and learn how to do what’s not only best for you, but for your team and the company as well. Climbing on top of others to ascend up the ladder may work well in the short-term, but when you come crashing down later, no one will be there to help you up. 8. Negative Nancy (or Ned) Negative Nancy types are the exact opposite of the people who try to find the silver lining in everything. Instead, they make sure everyone knows what’s wrong with every single situation. Every. Single. One. Before you open your mouth, answer this: “Does this feedback provide any sort of value? Or is it just me whining again?” Even if you do decide that it needs to be said, try to keep any adverse feelings out of it. Here’s an example of what a Negative Nancy could say, “The way the product team designed this is complete crap, as per usual.” Basically, just insulting the product folks and adding no suggestions to rectify the problem. Nice. Instead, one should say: “I’ve noticed these design aspects make it a little tricky to accomplish our goal. Do you think we could discuss this with the product team to see if there’s a way we can work together to improve it? It’s really hard to look at yourself objectively- most times, you won’t even notice that the habits you formed are causing others to throw darts at your photo. And, I repeat: In most situations, I don’t think you should give a second thought to what others think or say about you. But at work, a bad reputation can severely hinder your career success and movement forward. And, the truth is, if you’ve gained a “reputation,” it’s likely because it’s not just a one-time thing. Rather than panic that you’ve ruined everything forever, instead take a look at your behavior and start working hard to change it. You’ll be the most beloved person in the office in no time. Or, at least, more beloved than you were before.

Poll claims this is the sexiest accent in the world

Poll claims this is the sexiest accent in the world Poll claims this is the sexiest accent in the world A  global poll of 1.5 million people from 60 different countries, conducted by Big 7 Travel, determined, once and for all which accent is the most alluring. Unfortunately, there’s been a bit of controversy  surrounding the way the whole thing shook out.Yes, all the classic favorites made the Top 10, but according to the poll results, the official sexiest accent in the world is the one used by the rock monster-alien from Thor Ragnarok,  played by director Taika Waititi, and Lord of the Rings director Peter Jackson. The authors of the poll report, “To a novice ear, the New Zealand accent might sound just like the Australian accent, but Big 7 Travel readers disagree. The ‘Newzild’ dialect is outrageously charming.”Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more!Obvious choices like Italian and French accents both made appearances in the Top 10, each claiming the number four and seven spots respectively.Although not many people find regular ol‘ American accents particularly desirable, a good deal of voters expressed an affinity for a slow southern drawl. Coming in at number nine, was the Southern U.S. accent, the kind you mind find in residents of  North Carolina,  South Carolina,  Georgia,  Alabama,  Mississippi, Tennessee,  Arkansas,  Louisiana, or Kentucky.Rounding out the Top 10 was the Brazilian Portuguese accent, which, again makes perfect sense.“The least popular Slavic language” â€" the Croatian accent â€" came in at the bottom of the Top 50 list. Some of the others that bottomed the list were the Romanian accent, the Pakistani accent, German accents, Thai and New York accents, described as “fast and hypernasal.” If you belong to one of these regions and are a little “verrgert”  you’re not alone. The days following the release of Big 7’s report has been tailed by a bit of backlash. For example this tweet:This Twitter user’s response wa s a bit more nuanced:And, unsurprisingly, some of New Zealand’s neighbors didn’t take the news well:The problem might have a lot to do with poor public relations. Most of the Kiwis famous to Americans are famous in a strictly comedic  context (though singing sensation Lorde has managed to capture a large American audience.)Jemaine Clement and  Bret McKenzie of  Flight of the Concords for instance and Waititi are truly  three of the funniest minds to debut in the last few years, though they don’t exactly spring casanova to mind. There’s this reserved silliness attached to them. But if you extract the very same accent and observe it in a non-comedian, maybe’ you’ll feel differently. Or maybe you won’t.You might also enjoy… New neuroscience reveals 4 rituals that will make you happy Strangers know your social class in the first seven words you say, study finds 10 lessons from Benjamin Franklin’s daily schedule that will double your productivity The worst mistakes you can make in an interview, according to 12 CEOs 10 habits of mentally strong people

5 best things for your morning routine, according to science

5 best things for your morning routine, according to science 5 best things for your morning routine, according to science From  Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson  to Richard Branson, some of the most successful men alive claim that their secret is waking up at the crack of dawn. But research suggests that it’s not as simple as the  early bird  getting the worm- or getting paid. You need a  morning routine  to get the most out of those dawn hours.  Here are five scientist-approved ways to maximize your morning:Wake up at the same time every dayGetting up at the same time every day might matter just as much as getting up early. One  study  that followed 61 Harvard students for a month found that individuals with the most consistent wake-up times  performed better than those who opted to mix it up, despite getting the same amount of sleep overall.  When authors Benjamin Spall and Michael Xander interviewed  300 successful people  about their morning routines, they found that the average wake up time was a very specific 6:27 a.m. Every single day.Make time for things that make you feel goodIn their research S pall and Xander also found that the most successful morning people got up early to carve out time for things that make them feel good. This may be especially important for parents who may not otherwise have that time once the kids wake up. There’s evidence that  journaling  and  exercise  are great ways to get ready for the day, unless you hate exercise and journaling. Marie Kondo, lifestyle consultant and host of a new Netflix series,  says she starts the day by opening windows, burning incense, and of course, tidying up, but the trick is finding what works for you. Drawing a blank?  Morning sex  can boost mood, lower blood pressure, and improve concentration, not to mention make for a better marriage. So maybe start there.Kill your alarm clockWhile it may seem hard to become a morning person- and certainly a consistent one- without an alarm clock, learning to not depend on it is one of the best things people can do for themselves. Alarm clocks jolt people awake and cause what ex perts refer to as “sleep inertia” - a period of cognitive and motor impairment after waking up that feels like it qualifies as a coffee emergency.

How to Know if You Get Too Personal at Work- The Muse

How to Know if You Get Too Personal at Work- The Muse How to Know if You Get Too Personal at Work You genuinely like (most of) the people you work with, so a, “Hey, how was you weekend?” usually produces a story, rather than a one-word answer. And that’s more than OK. In fact, sharing who you are as a person- that you love going to CrossFit, that you’re planning a wedding, that you volunteer with animals- can help you build stronger relationships with your colleagues, which will help you get ahead. However, as the line blurs between “work friends” and real friends, it can be easy to forget that you’re in the office. (You know, the place where you want people to see you as focused and dedicated, where you want to be considered for promotions, where you want your request for a sick day to be taken at face value.) So, if you’re worried about crossing a line, use these rules to check-in with yourself and make sure you’re not going too far: You’re Sharing if It’s Helpful Sometimes, whatever is going on personally will affect what you realistically can or can’t do in a given week. Are you sick and should really stay home for a couple of days? Have you been up until 2 AM each night this week packing, so your attention to detail isn’t quite what it usually is? Is your family in town, so you need to leave when the workday is over- on the dot? If you’re having an off day, dealing with a stressful situation outside of work, or need to be out of the office for a bit, sharing that information can help your boss (or teammates) dole out work accordingly. Just spare others the nitty-gritty details by asking yourself: “Is including this piece of info going to help?” You’re Oversharing if It’ll Make Others Question Your Abilities Of course, there’s a flipside to being honest that you’re not 100% focused on work. And that’s that you can only go there so often. If you’re sick one day, dealing with personal drama the next, exhausted from staying up all night for your side gig the next- and everyone on your team knows it- you’re going to gain a reputation as someone who always has an excuse. The trick here is moderation. You don’t have to pretend nothing phases you; and in fact, if someone knows you’re spread thin, he might be willing to extend your deadline or understand if you need a slightly longer lunch on a given day. Just know that if you always respond to how are you with “Exhausted!” “Stressed!” “Overwhelmed!” or “Fuming!”- you won’t be a top candidate for exciting projects and promotions- because of the very reasons you state every day! So after an off-day- or week- focus on engaging with your colleagues in a positive way. If they ask how that tough situation is going, thank them for checking in, give a one sentence answer, and segue back to discussing your latest project. You’re Sharing if It’ll Help You Connect With Someone You’d like to have a strong relationship with everyone on your team, but there’s often that one person who’s hard to get to know. But then, she mentions a hobby- that she’s always looking for the next great recipe or loves watching baseball- and suddenly by mentioning what you cooked or watched last night, you have an instant ice-breaker. If it helps you talk about more than work with this person, go ahead and bond over your shared obsession with Giada. Just make sure you don’t overdo it, which can come off as fake (not building any bridges) or unproductive (because it takes you spend so much time chatting about other things that you get nothing done). You’re Oversharing if it Should Be Saved for After Hours Maybe this person’s favorite pastime isn’t so SFW: He can’t get enough of online dating horror stories or is so repulsed by one of the top presidential candidates that he always has a new story to discuss. You might have a lot of material here that you could use to bond with him; however, these kinds of conversations are not always appropriate at work (and could isolate your other colleagues unknowingly). So, before you launch into a recap of the worst Tinder date you’ve ever heard of, ask yourself if you were sharing this information outside of work where would you be? Making small talk at a networking event? You’re in the clear. Three margaritas deep with your old roommate? Save it for after hours. You see the people you work with every day, so it can be hard to keep things from them. But remember, it’s called water cooler gossip for a reason. Even if nowadays, people are more likely to crowd around a Keurig, colleagues chit chat, and if something is salacious, there’s always a chance it could get around. So, if you want to share something at work, but you’re not sure if it crosses a line, remember that you can always tell more, but you can’t take something back.

6 assumptions you shouldnt make, and 1 you always should

6 assumptions you shouldn't make, and 1 you always should 6 assumptions you shouldn't make, and 1 you always should In my seminars on collaborative leadership, I talk about the kind of assumptions that can derail a leader’s effectiveness. These include: Assuming that everyone on your team knows why the work they are doing is important (they don’t unless the tie-in to a bigger goal has been clearly stated and reinforced by frequent example). Assuming that your team knows why a project was successful (they may not be clear about which aspects were due to strategy and which to lucky circumstance). Assuming that your team knows how to fail successfully (they may be more likely to place blame unless you have a team process to examine set-backs for valuable learning opportunities). Assuming that people know why you came to a particular conclusion (they won’t unless you let them in on your thinking process).Follow Ladders on Flipboard!Follow Ladders’ magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and more! Assuming that everyone on your team feels valued, trusted, and safe (they won’t unless you have created an emotionally nurturing work environment). Assuming you have people’s commitment (which is difficult to know unless you ask directly, “Are you with me?”).But not all assumptions are harmful. In fact, there is one assumption that I advise leaders to always make. You should assume that at least one person didn’t understand what you said. Some of the biggest problems in business communication happen because we believe that we are being clear. We’re not. At least, not to everyone.Which explains why I was so glad to hear from Bob Berkowitz, a Principal at The Dilenschneider Group, who contacted me with a unique and practical approach to dealing with this issue. He thinks that all of us should become our own “translators.” Here are a few notes from our conversation:Carol Kinsey Goman: Becoming a translator is an intriguing   concept â€" but what does it mean?Bob Berkowitz: Over 90% of our conversations are with oursel ves, and we speak our personal language fluently. Therefore, we fool ourselves into believing that everyone understands us in the same way. But, everyone is different in the way they hear and perceive things and take in information. Each has a different level of education and background in the subject matter. Even my wife, who knows me better than any person on earth, sometimes misunderstands me because I didn’t do a good job communicating my thoughts to her. If someone who is as close to you as a spouse does not always understand you, imagine how tough it is for others, especially in the business world where often they are strangers. Therefore, you have to constantly “translate” what you mean and you have to do it in a way that is right for the people you are trying to reach.Goman: One thing I’ve noticed with many of the leaders I coach is that even when they aren’t clearly communicating, their staff rarely says, “I don’t understand.” Instead, people try to guess wh at the leader really wants.Berkowitz: Right. So your job as a communicator â€" especially if you are a leader â€" is to constantly clarify what you mean. Never take it for granted that your audience understands you. They may be nodding their heads as if they are absorbing your thoughts, they may be taking notes, and they might even be able to feed back to you exactly what you said. All of which means that they heard your words, but not necessarily the intent or meaning of your message. A great interpreter follows up important statements with clarifying phrases such as: “Here’s what I mean by that …” ?“Here are the implications of what I’m talking about …” “Here’s how I came to this conclusion …” “Let me give you an example of (a story about) what I’m saying …” “Here’s another way of looking at the situation …”Goman: Of course, putting ideas into simple, jargon-free words also helps, as does the use of metaphor and analogy to tie new concepts i nto references that are more familiar. But one of my favorite techniques is one I use when there is a lull in the Q A portion after a speech. I’ll say: “Here’s a question I am often asked . . .” Then I ask and answer my own question. Would you advise this in other situations?Berkowitz:   Absolutely. It’s a highly empathetic way of communicating that goes even further in clarifying your message. When you ask and answer your own questions, you are putting yourself in the place of those you are trying to reach. What do you want them to know? You might even say something like:“If I were in your place, I might be wondering   . . . what does this really mean (or how does this change things)?”To improve your leadership effectiveness the next time you chair a meeting, try this: Assume that someone on your team didn’t understand what you just said, and take that extra step to clarify and explain.Any questions?  Follow me on Twitter. One Thing Youre Probably Getting Wrong with Your Resume

One Thing Youre Probably Getting Wrong with Your Resume One Thing Youre Probably Getting Wrong with Your Resume Does your resume tell your whole story? After reading it, will people know the details of everything youve achieved? If so, its probably not working. I love to paint and Im extremely detailed and anal when I do it. If Im going to paint a piece of fruit, its going to have every single detail exactly right or Ill tie myself in knots trying (hence, I am constantly tied in knots!) But Im taking a painting class right now that is transforming the way I paint and funnily enough, the lessons Im learning are the ones I teach my clients every day. The class is called How to Paint Fast, Loose and Bold and, as the title would suggest, its all about loosening up. Were being encouraged to paint with big brushes and to eliminate the details that are not important while choosing the ones that are. In this way, we can convey all the important information about our subject while keeping the painting fresh and interesting. This is exactly what I do when I write a resume, so I have no idea why it didnt occur to me before to do the same while painting! The key to a successful resume and the thing most people get wrong is that its not supposed to be your life story. Its not supposed to tell people everything you did. Its not supposed to talk about every project you worked on, every responsibility you held, every technology you ever used, every language you ever programmed in if you try to convey all that, your reader will get lost in the weeds and your resume will be dull and long-winded. Instead, your resume should be like the painting I featured in this post. It was painted by our teacher Patti Mollica. Click to enlarge it and notice how she conveys everything you need to know about the scene, but while using big bold strokes. Looking at that painting, you almost feel as though youre there with her in Times Square on a rainy day. (Check out the rest of her paintings here. Theyre pretty amazing). If you use bold strokes on your resume, if you eliminate all the unnecessary detail and focus only on the important stuff, your resume will sing like that painting. So spend some time going over your resume looking for the unnecessary details. And if youd like to know more about how to decide on whats necessary and unnecessary, sign up for the Blue Sky free resume writing course, delivered by email. Youll soon get the hang of it.
